You are trying to quietly ponder “What’s for dinner?”,while your family is screaming “WE’RE HUNGRY!” It’s not like you just have to cook a quick and easy meal and it is over! NOOOO! Then your overwhelmed-exhausted-self has to do all of the dishes. Because dinner time can make a complete mess of your kitchen. I don’t know about you, but I used to dirty half of the bowls and utensils in the kitchen by the time I had dinner on the table. You don’t have time for a totally trashed kitchen. So before you decide that you are just too tired for dinner at home, check out these 6 super easy kitchen cleaning secrets that will help you go from overwhelmed to KITCHEN HERO!
7 Super Easy Kitchen Cleaning Secrets
1. The Dishwasher/Meal Cooking Solution
The dishwasher’s job is to work as your kitchen assistant. In order for your kitchen assistant to help, it must either be cleaning your dishes or ready for new dirty dishes. Dishes that sit in your sink for a day or a week take more than double the time to get clean, and looking at nasty dishes just makes you want to avoid cooking dinner that much more. Here is how you can start making your kitchen assistant work harder for you. Since you are already in the kitchen, empty your dishwasher while you are cooking, then fill it. If it is full (or even close) run it and repeat. Having an empty dishwasher to throw your bowls, utensils, and dinner plates into as soon as you have used them will keep your sink empty!
2. Baggies Keep the Fridge Cleaner
You have cooked an amazing dinner, but now you have leftovers. If you put it in those handy plastic storage containers, you know that you are just adding more dirty dishes. Instead, start storing your leftovers in baggies. It will fit nicely in your fridge, you can label it, and if it gets forgotten in the deepest darkest part of the fridge you can just throw it away.
3.Crockpot Liners = No Scrubbing
Crockpot meals are one of the most-used mealtime solutions in busy households. There is nothing better than your dinner magically cooking without you having to stand over it. As wonderful as crockpot meals are, you still have to clean the pot! And, the pot can get totally GROSS! I won’t even go into the details of the nastiness that can be left after a beautiful crockpot meal. Crockpot liners are your new best friend. All you do is line your crockpot, cook your meal per directions, and then let your crockpot cool. You can carefully tie off the liner and throw it into the trash leaving little to no grossness behind. It will cut your cleaning down to SECONDS! Here is the crockpot liner I like to use.
4. Only Wash One Pot
One pot meals are a thing of beauty! Not only are they quick and easy, but you also dirty fewer dishes during cooking. Pots can take the longest to get clean. So here’s the secret, after dinner, allow your pot to soak (if needed), but only for thirty minutes. Set a timer and go back after that amount of time and go ahead and just get it clean. Then set it to the side to dry. Because there is nothing worse than a nasty pot of cold water staring at you every time you walk past the sink.
5. Leftover Day! HOORAY!
Do you mentally hear the theme song to Survivor every time you open up your fridge? You know to truly venture to the back of the fridge will take all of your courage and physical strength. You fear what you might find. And you are wondering if you should form a secret alliance to help you tackle all of those half empty leftovers. So what is the solution? Have a leftover day once a week. Depending on how many leftovers you have, this can work for lunch or dinner. Everyone gets to pick their favorite leftover and well eat that for a meal. YES! It cleans out your fridge AND you don’t have to cook a meal that day.
6.In A Crunch Don’t Feel Shame
Look when it comes to how often you make dinner for your family or how you go about doing it, guilt should not be a motivator. Forget what you see everyone else doing and do what is best for your family. If you are trying to eat at home more often but you are struggling with a busy week/month/season don’t feel bad about taking a few shortcuts. Just throw those paper plates, utensils, or throw away baking dishes into your cart at the store and be happy that you are doing the BEST you can to provide meals for your busy family. Yes, throw away products add to the overall cost of each meal BUT even with that extra cost, it is still cheaper than eating out. And if you eat fast food, you are creating the same amount of trash!
7. One Cup A Day
Limiting each person in your family to one cup a day, drastically reduces your amount of dishes. An easy way to limit each person to one cup is to use insulated cups. You can find them at Walmart cheaper than Amazon. They will keep your water cold all day. Purchase two days worth for each person and rotate them.
You are ROCKIN’ IT whether you feel like it or not. You are busy! Your schedule is full and dinner can be really hard some days. These easy kitchen cleaning secrets will help you get dinner on the table with less work in the kitchen.
