I panicked when the forecast called for a whole day of rain on our last trip. I thought our whole day was ruined. I frantically message my travel agent, and she gave me the best tip of our whole trip. She said, “Enjoy it! Disney is fun in the rain!” And she was right! Our day at Epcot in the rain was fun. So how do you enjoy Disney in the rain?
Disney In The Rain
1. Ride Rides!
A rainy day is a great day to ride rides because lines tend to be shorter. Indoor rides will operate normally. Outdoor rides are more questionable. They will not operate during lightning! But you can check the My Disney Experience Apps to see what rides are up and running. If you miss a FastPass+ because a ride is down, you will be able to use that FP+ on another ride. You can simply reschedule using the My Disney Experience App.
Characters that meet and greet indoors will keep their regular schedule. Characters that meet outside might change times or locations. You can check out changes in the My Disney Experience App. Also keep an eye out; because, characters can pop up for unscheduled meet and greets.
Every park at Disney World has several indoor shows. A rainy day is a great time to take in more shows than you might on a beautiful sunny day.
4. Order In
Disney Resorts have an awesome pizza delivery. I always pack one or two card games to keep us occupied. You can also snuggle up and watch the Disney Channel.
Take a break and grab a bite! Whether you are looking for a snack, ice cream or a full meal there are many indoor quick service restaurants. Also, many table service restaurants in Epcot World Showcase have last minute reservations available. You can check for availability using the My Disney Experience app.
Walt Disney World Resorts have fun arcades. No need to bring quarters, you load a game card at the front of the arcade. They have a good selection of games for younger to older kids (or adults). The arcade is a fun place to hang out on a rainy day when the pool is not an option or when you are stuck at the resort.
7. Disney Springs
You can use My Disney Experience app or Open Table to find open reservations at Disney Springs restaurants.
Disney Springs is more than shopping and food (although that is fun). You can grab a movie at the AMC Movie Theater. Or get active and bowl at Splitsville Luxury Lanes.
Tips To Enjoying Disney In The Rain
Check Your Weather App
Afternoon pop up showers are very common during the Summer. You need to check your weather app to determine if it is going to rain for 30 minutes or the rest of the day. It is easy to hide out in the park (even if you are not prepared) for a short amount of time.
No matter what time of year, you need to pack ponchos! They do sell ponchos in the park but they are more expensive. I prefer the super cheap ponchos you can pick up at Target or Walmart. They easily fit in your park bag. You can buy extras and just throw away your wet poncho instead of trying to dry it.
Pro tip: Wear a poncho on wet rides (especially Kali River Rapids) to stay dry.
If you know it is going to rain most of your park day consider traveling lighter. Pare down your park bag consider renting a hard plastic stroller instead of bringing yours. Talking less stuff in the park means you aren’t trying to keep a bunch of stuff dry.
Put your phone and other electronics in a plastic baggie. This also works well when you ride wet rides.
Adjust Your Schedule
Consider going earlier, later or breaking up your day into two sessions in order to miss the heaviest rain. On our rainy Epcot day, we went for a couple of hours in the morning and rode rides then we went back to the resort for the afternoon. And went back in the evening. If there is going to be lightning or heavy rain take a break go back to your room for a little and go back to the park later when the weather is friendlier.
The weather can change quickly in Florida! It is a good idea to check the weather forecast before you leave for your trip plus check each night for the next day. Walt Disney World knows how to operate in the rain and you can still have a magical trip.
Going during the Summer you not only need to prepare for rain, you need to know how to survive the heat at Disney!
