Over 10 years ago, my husband and I made the choice to leave the corporate world to follow a passion serving in ministry full time. Along with this decision came a big change in our budget. I am going to let you in on a little secret, a ministry salary is smaller than a corporate salary! But the opportunity to live a focused passionate life is more than a fair trade off. The change in our budget meant a refocusing on priorities. We went from purchasing clothes and Starbucks whenever we wanted to buying used when we can, cutting cable and having to save patiently for large purchases.
It also meant a change in our food budget. We LOVE food! And when we were first dating and married we ate out most meals. During different times in our marriage, we have struggled with our food budget. Our main struggles were eating out because we didn’t have a plan and letting food go to waste. And to be honest it felt like we were justified in eating out. Our son has chronic illnesses that left us spending hours running to different specialists. Our daughter had her own interventions and health issues. I was so overwhelmed with small kids that I could barely keep the house clean enough and I wasn’t keeping food on the table.
Then I had a rude awakening: Both of my children were diagnosed with food allergies and eating out at any restaurant was no longer an option. I had to start cooking and planning every meal. I had to learn to read every label at the grocery store. At first, I was very stressed by our situation but over time I was able to develop a meal planning system that saved us time and money. I did not realize how out of control our food budget had become before food allergies interrupted our lives. I was literally throwing away money. And while eating out met a short term need it was stealing money from our long-term desires.
